Chapter Sixteen

George pulled on her coat and threw her bag over her shoulder, delighted to have the opportunity to leave work and go with Whitney to the law firm. The issue with Ross still weighed heavily on her mind, and it frustrated her that it seemed to be invading everything she did. It didn’t help that she was still annoyed over Stephen being promoted, despite assuring anyone who asked her that she wasn’t at all bothered.

She opened her door and, in her peripheral vision, spied Stephen heading in the direction of her office. She pretended not to have noticed him and hurried towards the door leading outside into the university grounds, having no intention of finding out whether he wanted to speak to her.

When she arrived at the station, Whitney was already waiting in the car park. She pulled up beside her and rolled down the window.

‘Hop in,’ she said.

They headed into the city centre, slowing the car as they joined the long tail of traffic. There were cones everywhere and large signs warning of expected delays. Whitney tapped her fingers against her knee.

‘Have you thought any more about the proposal?’ Whitney asked.

‘I’m trying not to.’ George kept her eyes fixed firmly on the queue of traffic in front of her. If she turned to face Whitney, her friend would be able to read the uncertainty in her eyes.

‘Have you actually seen him since he asked?’ Whitney pushed.

‘We’re due to go out at the weekend but I’m thinking about cancelling,’ she admitted.

‘Why?’

‘Because I can’t make up my mind what to say.’ She hated feeling this way. She liked having order and control over everything in her life, and this was one of those situations which failed on both counts.

‘But you must have at least thought about whether you’re going to say yes,’ Whitney continued.

‘No. No. I don’t know. I can’t talk about it anymore, okay?’ George flashed a helpless look in Whitney’s direction.

‘It’s okay, I understand. Let’s move on to today’s visit. Our main concern is to find out about this incident Carly had to deal with on behalf of Julian Lyons. It could provide us with the motive.’

When they eventually arrived, they parked in the street and walked to the front entrance. They headed to the reception desk.

‘We’d like to speak to Geraint Jones, please, Chelsea,’ Whitney said.

The receptionist phoned him and, after waiting a few minutes, he came to meet them.

‘I didn’t expect to see you again so soon,’ he said, smiling.

For someone who’d just lost his boss, he seemed remarkably upbeat. Had he taken over Carly’s position already?

‘Something has come to light which we’d like to speak to you about,’ Whitney said.

‘We can go to my office,’ he said.

They followed in silence until reaching his office, and they sat around the circular table in the corner.

‘We understand Carly dealt with an incident concerning Julian Lyons and one of the company’s clients. What can you tell us about it?’

He frowned. ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m sure if Julian was involved in anything detrimental to the company I’d have been informed.
